English I 2017-18-4th and 6th

Course Description

Welcome to English I. In English I you should prepare for a challenging curriculum, stimulating reading and writing exercises, and active participation. In this course we will dive into four major components: vocabulary, writing, grammar and literature (nonfiction, fiction, drama and poetry). We will examine point-of-view, complex character development, imagery and tone. We will learn how to recognize and analyze themes, and compare and contrast universal ideas, and symbolism. We will also analyze elements of style, including word choice, tone, and sentence structure, sensory and figurative language. Additionally, we will experiment with different styles of writing including argumentative, explanatory and narrative writing, and learn how to construct sentences with meaning. We will spend much time learning proper grammar and expanding our vocabulary by studying Greek and Latin roots.

Please note that this is an Honors English class. You should expect and welcome that this class will push you in new ways. In this class we are going to build upon your previous experiences and provide a toolkit that will push your reading, writing and grammar to new heights. In order to prepare for this process, I ask that you come with an open attitude and a readiness to learn.  You will frequently have assignments that need to be completed outside of class.   Please check Google classroom frequently, as I will be updating it on a regular basis. This is the first place you should check for notes, daily assignments and homework in the event you are absent.   The class is linked below; however, if you want an invite to join, please e-mail me.  I will send you an invite; this will allow you to be subscribed to your student's class.
